My name is Saul Frank, and I’m proud to share the story of my family’s business, Camera Electronic.

Our journey began in 1968, when my dad, Ronald 'Ron' Frank, started the Camera Electronic Service Company, known in those early days as CESCO, from our family home. Dad had a gift for repairing cameras and a deep love for photography, and word quickly spread about the quality of his work.

By 1971, demand had grown enough for Dad to open his first store on Angove Street in North Perth. Over time, we moved to larger premises. First to Fitzgerald Street in 1988, and then to our current purpose-built showroom and workshop on Stirling Street in 1996.

From a young age, I was involved in the business, helping out on Saturdays, learning the trade from Dad, and often staying late into the evening perfecting my skills. My brother Howard joined a few years later. While I gravitated towards the shop floor and customer service, Howard trained as an electronics technician before moving into the financial side of the business.

In 2008, Dad retired and handed the reins to Howard and me, although he continued to offer guidance until his passing in 2016. At times, we’ve had four generations working in the business - our great-grandfather, Dad, both of us, and even our sons have all played a role.

June this year marked our 54th anniversary which was a milestone that means a lot to our family. We’ve seen photography evolve from film to digital, and through it all we’ve worked hard to ensure Camera Electronic keeps pace. We’ve travelled internationally to trade shows to stay ahead of the curve, expanded our retail presence across Perth, and launched Photo Live Expo, which has grown into Australia’s largest consumer photographic event.

Beyond products, we see ourselves as part of a community. We run workshops, photo-walks, and events to help people get the most from their gear, and we collaborate with local creatives to nurture a vibrant photography culture.

Joining Family Business Association
We joined Family Business Association after winning a year’s membership through the Rising Stars Business News Award. We quickly realised the value it offered, so much so that we’ve been members ever since. The support, connections, and learning opportunities have been invaluable.

One of the highlights for us has been the Forum Group Program. Howard has been part of a Forum Group since 2016, and it’s given him a trusted space to share experiences, seek advice, and learn from others who understand the unique challenges of running a family business. It’s played a real part in shaping how we plan and grow.

Looking back, I’m incredibly proud of what our family has built. From a small home-based repair workshop to a multi-store business serving customers across Australia. Our success is built on hard work, adaptability, and the values Dad instilled in us.

As we look ahead, Howard and I are committed to honouring that legacy while embracing the opportunities the future holds.
