We had a chat with third-generation, Ryan Green to learn more about his family's business, South Eastern Gaskets.

Tell us about your family business.

South Eastern Gaskets is a third-generation family-owned and operated manufacturing business. We were first founded in 1974 by Les Green, who seized an opportunity to supply a part his current employer could not. He purchased our first clicker press (which now lives in our foyer), and set up in the backyard shed of the family home. South Eastern Gaskets was born. 51 years later, we are now a team of 14, across 2 states, running 6 CNC cutting tables, 4 mechanical presses, 2 compression moulding presses and 1 swing beam press and the mantra of ‘anyone can cut a gasket’ it’s all about getting it to the customer when they want it and how they want it.

Robert, our current Managing Director and Les’ son, has been paramount in the diversification and growth of South Eastern Gaskets. With a trade as a fitter and turner, and many years of experience as a tool maker, Rob’s keen aptitude for manufacturing has allowed us to widen our offerings to customers. Not just through product but through better service by implementing processes that improve lead times. Whether that is by new equipment, or refined internal procedures.

Now, with Ryan and Mitchell (Rob’s sons) managing the business, we are looking at moving the business into further growth through marketing and development. While maintaining the mantra ‘anyone can cut a gasket’.

What has been your greatest success?

Our greatest success has been the implementation of our CNC cutting tables. Rob purchased the first table back in 2007, unsure if it was the right move or not, he just knew he had to do something different. Now with 6 tables across two states, it was certainly the right move. They have allowed us to remain competitive by reducing waste, lead times and tooling fees. While also diversifying our capabilities and offerings to customers.

What do you value about FBA?

For quite a while I was looking into different peer groups, as I felt I needed other avenues to discuss ideas and problems. I came across FBA and reached out, and they have been nothing but friendly, understanding and supportive. I had some reservations at the start, wondering if I should have joined a more industry-specific type of group. However, after attending the introductory seminar, those reservations were quelled immediately. As much as there were businesses of different sizes and scales and industries in the room, we were all family businesses and faced similar issues. I knew the type of issues we faced were not going to be discussed elsewhere, or as openly, and I knew I had joined the right group. We are also very excited to be joining the Emerging Leaders Forum Group for every reason I shared above.

What advice would you give to other family businesses?

Take as much advantage of what FBA offers as possible. The smallest piece of information or advice can have major benefits.
